Malacca Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed October 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
Malacca (Melaka) is a state within Malaysia, and all entry requirements are governed by Malaysian federal immigration law. Travelers enter Malaysia via designated ports of entry, such as Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or via land borders, and then travel onward to Malacca. All visitors must have a valid passport, any required visas, and may be asked to show proof of onward travel and sufficient funds. The immigration process is generally efficient, with officers verifying travel documents and entry eligibility. Travelers should ensure their passport has adequate validity and blank pages before departure, and understand the specific visa rules that apply to their nationality.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Malaysia's visa policy varies by nationality. Visa-free entry is granted to citizens of many countries for tourism, while others require an eVisa or a traditional sticker visa. The allowed duration of stay is determined by the immigration officer at the point of entry and is stamped in the passport.

Visa-Free Entry
Typically 30 or 90 days, as stamped on arrival.

Citizens of listed countries can enter Malaysia for social or business visits without a visa.

Includes
United States United Kingdom Canada Australia New Zealand European Union member states Japan South Korea Singapore Brunei

The exact duration is at the discretion of the immigration officer. Passport must usually be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry. Citizens of ASEAN countries generally receive 30-day visa-free entry.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
Typically 30 days.

Citizens of certain countries must obtain an eVisa online prior to travel.

Includes
India China Sri Lanka Nepal Myanmar Bangladesh Pakistan Bhutan Serbia Montenegro
How to Apply: Apply online via the official Malaysian Immigration eVisa website (https://malaysiavisa.imi.gov.my). Processing typically takes 2-3 working days.
Cost: Approximately MYR 200 (varies by nationality and processing type).

The eVisa must be printed and presented upon arrival. It is a single-entry visa. Do not use third-party sites; use only the official portal.

Visa Required
As determined by the visa type.

Citizens of countries not listed in the visa-free or eVisa categories must apply for a visa at a Malaysian diplomatic mission.

How to Apply: Apply in person at the nearest Malaysian Embassy or Consulate. Requires application forms, photos, flight itinerary, proof of accommodation, and financial means.

Processing times vary. Some nationalities may require a reference or sponsor in Malaysia.

Arrival Process

Upon arrival at a Malaysian port of entry (e.g., KLIA), all travelers must clear immigration. The process is straightforward but requires having the correct documents ready.

1
1. Disembarkation and Queue
Follow signs to immigration. Join the appropriate queue (Foreign Passport).
2
2. Document Check
Present your passport, completed arrival/departure card (if required; often digital now), and any visa or eVisa printout to the immigration officer.
3
3. Biometrics and Interview
Your photo will be taken and fingerprints may be scanned. The officer may ask simple questions about your visit.
4
4. Passport Stamp
If entry is approved, the officer will stamp your passport, indicating the date of entry and the 'until' date of your permitted stay.
5
5. Proceed to Baggage Claim and Customs
After immigration, collect your luggage and proceed through the green (nothing to declare) or red (goods to declare) customs channel.

Documents to Have Ready

Tips for Smooth Entry

Have all documents organized and easily accessible before you reach the counter.
Answer questions politely and confidently. Keep answers simple and consistent with your visa purpose (e.g., 'tourism').
Double-check the entry stamp in your passport for the correct 'until' date before leaving the immigration counter.
While not always enforced, having printouts of your flight itinerary, hotel bookings, and eVisa can prevent issues.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Routine vaccines (MMR, DTaP), Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Japanese Encephalitis (for rural, long-term travel), Rabies (for adventure travelers/animal handlers).

Traveling with Children

No specific requirements for entry. However, if a child is traveling with only one parent, with relatives, or alone, it is advisable to carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) to avoid immigration queries about potential child abduction.

Traveling with Pets

Strict regulations apply. Pets (dogs, cats) require an Import Permit from the Malaysian Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), valid health certificate, microchip, and rabies vaccination certificate. Pets must undergo quarantine upon arrival for a minimum of 7 days. Advance planning (months) is essential.

Extended Stays

To stay longer than your tourist pass allows, you must apply for an extension at an Immigration Department office in Malaysia before your current pass expires. Extensions are not guaranteed and are typically granted for valid reasons (e.g., medical treatment). For long-term stays, consider applying for a different visa type (e.g., Social Visit Pass for spouses of Malaysians, Student Pass, Employment Pass) from overseas.
